26th Annual Irish Evening

Mary O'Malley At HoCoPoLitSo's 26th annual Irish Evening, Mary O'Malley, a fisherman's daughter from the Irish-speaking west of Ireland, the remarkable eldest of ten children, was the featured poet. A Hennessy Award winner for her first poems, A Consideration of Silk in 1990, she has since published four more collections. Her work, says a critic, "encompasses both harshness and sensuality, desolate loneliness and a wicked sense of humor."

O'Malley was introduced by His Excellency Noel Fahey, the fifth Irish ambassador to honor HoCoPoLitSo in this manner. Dominick Murray once again organized the concert of traditional music, song, and stepdancing that followed, on February 27 at the Jim Rouse Theatre.
