A Evening with Dr. Gordon Livingston

Mary O'MalleyHoCoPoLitSo (Howard County Poetry and Literature Society) presented an evening with Columbia author and psychiatrist Dr. Gordon Livingston reading from his bestselling memoir, Only Spring: On Mourning the Death of My Son and discussing his other works Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart and And Never Stop Dancing at 8 PM on Friday, October 13, 2006, Slayton House, Wilde Lake Village Center, Columbia, MD.

For more than 30 years, psychiatrist Livingston listened to his patients’ intimate secrets and troubles. A former Vietnam War surgeon and a bereaved parent twice over, Livingston mulled over his own life and the lives of his patients. He recorded 30 things he found to be truths, like "Only bad things happen quickly," and "We are what we do."  Later, he expanded those ideas into thoughtful essays.  Mark Helprin, author of A Soldier of the Great War and Winter’s Tale, says of Livingston’s book Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart, “To read him is to trust him and to learn, for his life has been touched by fire, and his motives are absolutely pure.”  Join him for a reading and conversation at 8 PM on Friday, October 13, 2006 at Slayton House, Wilde Lake Village Center, Columbia, MD.

Enlarging the audience for contemporary poetry and literature since 1974, The Howard County Poetry and Literature Society produces readings, residencies, and special events for the general public and high school students and since 1986 The Writing Life, a writer-to-writer cable television series.  For more information on HoCoPoLitSo call 410-772-4568.
